We mentioned these huge swarms of starlings in a previous blog, but this picture taken by Paul really drives the point home and illustrates one of the unique quirks of the area local to our Rhosneigr bed and breakfast. It’s incredible to see just how many of them there are in the skies, fairly regularly performing their usual aerial acrobatics. When they’re flying around in an impossibly co-ordinated flock it hardly looks real!

You can really get a sense of how many birds there are when they settle on the wires overhead. Leaving little space from wing to wing, they swing in to land and perch on the wire, each one finding a place or shuffling over to let others budge in. The end result is a wire that’s loaded with starlings, bending and shaking.

There’s so many birds that it moves the wire a surprising amount. Actually, not too long ago, enough birds flew away from a wire simultaneously that it broke the cabling and sent the wire sparking into a bush below. The fire brigade had to come out!

Thankfully, the wire was repaired and measures put in place to prevent this from happening again, so we can assure you that our wires are now starling-proof. Why not head on down to Anglesey and join us for a spot of birdwatching?
