Back in August, we were treated to something very special. Our luxury accomodation in Anglesey is perfectly placed close to RAF Valley, an airbase used primarily for trainer aircraft, which means that there are always jets and other aircraft to be seen in the skies overhead. What’s more, our property is in the perfect place along the flightpath to watch them both take off and land. As you might imagine, when we heard that the Red Arrows would be flying overhead in full formation to practice, we were very excited to get out and watch.
As luck would have it, the day was absolutely faultless, without a cloud to be seen against the clear blue sky. We all gathered outside in the Glanllyn Bach garden to watch, and eagerly awaited the sounds of roaring jets on the horizon. Soon, the skies were filled with smoke, as you can see pictured, and the Red Arrows were in flight.
It was absolutely amazing to see the jets going through formation after formation, with the distinctive red paint of each plane catching the sun. In typical style, each pilot showed extreme skill and precision even in practice, making for a sight that you just don’t get to see every day. Their flight path took them right overhead, as is often the case with the regular flights out of RAF Valley – only this time, it was a little more of an occasion!
Only after it had ended did we realise that we had just watched what felt like our very own private airshow, put on just for us to watch. Of course, there were plenty of people gathered all around the area to watch, but from our own field it felt as exclusive as it gets.
We actually have a prior connection to the Red Arrows, believe it or not! As well as the luxury accomodation of Glanllyn Bach, we also operate a glass art studio called The House of Ugly Fish which specialises in the creation of bespoke pieces of art made in glass. Lisa actually created a piece of fused glass art for a pilot who flew in the Red Arrows! You can see it pictured here on the left, backlit by LED lights.
